Abstract

AbstractDyeing of silk fabric was carried with curcumin, extracted from turmeric, which is known for its yellow colour and antioxidant properties. Design expert Box‐Behnken design (BBD) model was employed to perform dyeing experiments on silk fabric with curcumin dye. The dyed fabrics were characterized for its functional properties by colour measurement as K/S values, antioxidant activity by DPPH assay and UPF. The curcumin dyed silk samples showed upto 88% antioxidant activity and good to excellent ultraviolet protection depending on the percentage of curcumin used. The effect of pre‐mordanting using metal mordants was also studied.
