Abstract

Multigrid solution techniques for elliptic PDE’s are presented and applied to a simple Stommel-type ocean model. Two general multigrid strategies are outlined: the Correction Scheme (CS), and the Full Approximation Scheme (FAS), and the choices of smoothers, injections and interpolations between different grids are discussed. The problem of handling irregular boundaries is discussed in some detail. A section outlines a method to include islands in ocean models, when a stream function is used to describe the flow. Finally, test results comparing the efficiency of SOR computations and multigrid methods are shown using a time-dependent Stommel model on a spherical grid. Solutions with rectangular and irregular coastlines are presented. The multigrid method is faster in the initial phases of a spin up process for a rectangular ocean up to a factor of 5 and for irregular coastlines up to a factor of 3.
