Abstract

Increasing numbers of patients with congenital heart disease survive into adulthood as a result of improved medical and surgical care. This group of patients requires regular ongoing assessment in specialist centers with a multidisciplinary approach. Imaging has an essential role in monitoring disease and treatment. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is the modality of choice because it provides data for a functional assessment and excellent morphologic detail. Among the patients who have congenital cardiac conditions, many will have undergone corrective surgical procedures that require specific tailoring of the MR imaging examination. This review highlights the spectrum of such congenital conditions and demonstrates how MR imaging is invaluable in the ongoing assessment of congenital heart disease in adults.
