Abstract
This paper describes the evolution of the use of engine models and optimal control theory for engine control systems research at General Motors Research Laboratories. It outlines the progress from simple static parameter optimization on an engine in a test cell, through numerical optimization using multipoint regression models, to full state feedback linear quadratic optimal control and, finally, to an optimal output feedback control with state estimation using an eighteen state dynamic perturbation engine model.
