Abstract
A multipurpose batch plant is viewed as a discrete-event dynamical system represented by a digraph. Modeling equations derived from minimax algebra are used to describe its performance. The state variables describe the starting times of processing activities. The inputs are the times at which resources are made available, and the outputs are the times at which resources are released. Minimax control equations are used to compute the inputs required to achieve desired outputs. Graphs for several different types of operation of the plant have been developed based on a simple process digraph. The scheduling that results in minimization of the cycle time of the system is chosen as the optimum operating policy of the plant.
