Abstract

The textile industry is increasingly looking to reduce the time, energy, water, and environmental pollution in the coloration of textiles using new technologies. Microwave irradiation is one of the technologies which can be employed in different textile processes, including pretreatment, dyeing, finishing, and printing. Microwave heating can accelerate the heating and reduce time and energy consumption. Also, it can improve the extraction of colorants from natural dye sources and promote dye exhaustion. Pretreatment of textile fibers with microwave irradiation can affect their dyeing properties. In this chapter, the applications of microwave irradiation in natural dye extraction, pretreatment, and coloration of textiles with synthetic and natural dyes are reviewed.
