Abstract

One of the major advances in Computer Technology in early 1960's was the development of multi-access time sharing systems in which computer system resources were made available to a large population of users, through data networks. The computer-communication networks may use either circuit-switched or packet-switched techniques and require various intermediate processors, e.g., IMP (Node), DTE, DCE, PAD, Modems etc. With the availability of 16 bit (also 32 bit) microprocessors, most of the processing is now done through microprocessor based computers. The paper discusses the use of microprocessor in these circuits and also illustrates the role of microprocessor in large ESS's, PICS, VRS and Hospital Computerization system
