Abstract

Artificial Intelligence encompasses metaheuristic algorithms. The researchers have applied these algorithms to find optimal solutions to many engineering optimization problems. Typically, optimization problems are related to minimizing or maximizing objective function subject to various constraints. There are several metaheuristics algorithms proposed and used by researchers in the last three decades to solve the optimization problems across the engineering disciplines. Some of the widely used algorithms are Genetic Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, Firefly algorithm, and Grey Wolf algorithm. There is a need to follow all the practices, improvements, and research in the area of application of metaheuristics techniques in electrical transmission and distribution systems protection and consider the gaps in it. A bibliographical assessment and customary background of research in the area of electrical transmission and distribution systems protection is provided. More prominence is accorded to contemporary techniques. An attempt has been made to give the reader an insight into different metaheuristic algorithms employed for different protection functions in transmission and distribution systems, which will assist the power engineers and researchers in establishing the suitability of the method for their respective problems. The optimization problems discussed are relay coordination, PMU placement, estimation of fault section on the distribution network, and fault location estimation on transmission lines.
