Abstract
The use of larger high-speed synchronous motors is increasing in the process industry. For these applications there are two basic types of machines, i.e., laminated pole and solid pole. Motors of these designs are available for across the line starting in sizes to 50 000 hp at 1800 r/min. Even larger machines can be expected for future applications. While the theory behind the design and use of these machines is not new, problems are highlighted in the areas of motor starting and/or acceleration, torsional vibration, lateral vibration, couplings, excitation controls, and surge protection.
