Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of using Iformation-Knowledge-Attitude-Practice (IKAP theory) to carry on health education on the patient with corneal transplant. Methods Totals of 100 patients, according to admission order, were randomly divided into two groups,50 patients in the control group received conventional health education, and 50 patients in experimental group received health education to them with IKAP theory. Then, health education effect of patients was compared in the two groups. Results Mastering relevant knowledge, skills, attitudes or behavior change were higher in the experimental group (94% and 92%,respectively) than those in the control group (48% and 50%,respectively),and the difference was statistically significant (x2 =12.846,10.709,respectively; P < 0.05).Satisfaction degree of patients in the experimental group was 98%,higher than that in the control group (78%),and the difference was statistically significant (x2 =4.735,P < 0.05).In one year follow up period, the re-hospitalization rate in experimental group significantly lower than that in the control group (2% vs 20% ; x2 =4.14,P < 0.05).Conclusions Using IKAP theory to carry on health education to the patient of corneal transplant can improve patient compliance and satisfaction, reduce recurrence rate of hospitalization.
