Abstract

Modern power grids are more realistic than old-fashioned grids in resolving the real-time issues with the help of wide area monitoring system (WAMS) supported by phasor measurement units (PMU). PMU are integral parts of any power grids which offer real-time measurements of power system state variables. These variables are used for numerous time-critical applications such as fault detection, voltage control, and islanding detection. Mining of data from PMU is a difficult task. Novel data processing tools and storage techniques are required to explore the maximum utilities of PMU-based WAMS. This chapter intends to study in detail the utility big data issues related to PMU-driven applications. The study also tries to understand various problems of PMU-based systems and solutions through modern data storage and processing techniques.
