Abstract

Bee venom is widely used for the manufacturing of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. A procedure for the detection of melittin, a characteristic component of bee venom, based on high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometric detection is reported. Conditions of chromatography-mass spectrometric detection of melittin are selected, and a solid-phase extraction-based procedure for melittin isolation from preparations containing bee venom is developed. The procedure proposed is successfully tested on both raw venom samples and cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations containing natural bee venom.
