Abstract

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry together with selected ion monitoring (SIM) technique provides an efficient tool in analysing vehicle and traffic emissions. With a low cost quadrupole mass spectrometer a programme can be constructed for monitoring more than 100 polycyclic organic compounds (POM) simultaneously. The high selectivity and sensitivity of mass selected detectors enable us to reduce the amount of precleaning necessary for the samples. Concentration of POM-compounds of GLC-SIM technique in engine emissions at low and high temperatures and in the air of busy street in Helsinki are given.
