Abstract

Application of Geomechanical modeling plays big role in resolving many formation related issues over entire life of the field. It starts from exploration stage through field development to abandonment. Geomechanics demonstrates how various problems encountered during different stages of field development like: exploration drilling, well completion, production and reservoir depletion are inter-related. Geomechanical models for the reservoir and overlying formations help to solve problems related to drilling, completion, and production. These include wellbore instability, sand production, optimizing production from fractured reservoirs, fault reactivation/leakage, and reservoir compaction. There are number of real examples from real world from each of these categories to validate the relevance of geomechanics in savings cost or improving reservoir performance. The geomechanical analyses produced by collectively integrating available data sets provides a powerful tool with which to reduce the costs associated with during different stages of field development.
