Abstract

Gas chromatography using flameless sulfur chemiluminescence detection was applied to the analysis of sulfur compounds in petroleum products. An inert sample inlet system for the analysis of sulfur compounds in liquified petroleum gases is described, along with the analysis of sulfur compounds in gasoline. This study was undertaken to evaluate operating characteristics of the analysis system with an emphasis toward practical application in a production laboratory. The chromatography and detection system exhibited very good precision, linearity, selectivity, and sensitivity. These characteristics were at least as good or better than those of conventional sulfur chemiluminescence detection. In addition, the flameless sulfur chemiluminescence detector exhibited greater ease of use and reliability.
