Abstract

Flow cytometry, originally developed for biomedical purposes, is now being put to extensive use in the study of microalgae. Successful applications to date include studies of cytochemistry, cell cycle dynamics and phytoplankton ecology. This review summarises recent work in a rapidly expanding field of research, and highlights those areas in which significant progress can be expected when the necessary equipment becomes more readily available.
