Abstract

Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations are performed of turbulent combustion ofinitially spherical flame kernels. The chemistry is described by a progress variable which isattached to a flamelet library. The merits of this reduction process is studied in detail toassess the validity of the method. In the turbulent cases the influence of flame stretch andcurvature on the local mass burning rate is studied and compared to an analytical model. It is found that there is a good agreement between the simulations and the model. Thenapproximations to the model are evaluated.
