Abstract

Self-adaptive long-range predictive control methods have some nice properties. This chapter deals with real-life applications of the EPSAC strategy, which is a specific long-range predictive control method. The development of a real-life automatic control system is much more than just programming a control algorithm. Rather some attention has been paid to the several aspects (hardware, software) which are important for the implementation and to the various phases that occur during the realization and testing of an adaptive automatic control system for industrial processes. In the first application, a self-adaptive microprocessor system for climate control, special attention was paid to the low cost aspect. The second application, a computer control system for large cutter suction dredgers, was an illustration of a difficult process where the use of commercial PID-type regulators was not successful.
