Abstract

Esophageal foreign body is defined as an object lodged in esophagus. Bad eating habit is the common cause for this condition. The aim of this study was to report application of endoscopy in management of esophageal foreign body in 28 dogs. Esophageal foreign body was confirmed using plain or barium esophagram. Location of foreign body was categorized into thoracic inlet (28.6%), base of the heart (21.4 %), and immediately in front of diaphragm (50.0%). The esophageal foreign bodies revealed in this study included chicken bones (50.0%), pig bones (17.9%), chicken jerky (14.2%), fishhooks (7.1%), duck bone (3.6%), human hairball (3.6%), and needle (3.6%). Small and digestable bony pieces were pushed into the stomach in 19 cases; small pieces and fishhooks were successfully retrieved in 9 cases. In this study, endoscopic removal of foreign body from esophagus was successful in 96.4% of cases. Endoscopic removal provides a safe and efficient procedure in treating such condition.
