Abstract

ABSTRACTIn the last 30 years transplant medicine has made an incredibly successful advancement due to highly-specialized staff, usage of new technologies, and skilful application of immunosuppressive medicine therapy. On a worldwide scale heart and renal transplantations are most frequent. The success of such operations is incredibly high after the first year, but marks a reduction almost in half after the tenth year. One of the main reasons for this is the occurrence of inflammation, modulated by incomplete HLA compatibility, levels of active antibodies and other factors—smoking, diabetes, foci of infection of different origin. In recent years a number of scientific studies have analyzed the two-way relation of influence between periodontal disease as focus of infection and precisely balanced immune profile of transplant patients. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of diode laser therapy as an adjunctive treatment to mechanical periodontal therapy among patients on haemodialysis or with renal transplant and having chronic gingivitis or chronic periodontitis.Nineteen patients on renal replacement therapy, i.e. with renal transplantation or receiving haemodialysis, were included in this research. During treatment group I patients (test group, n = 12) underwent scaling and root planing (SRP) + laser therapy—disinfection of periodontal pockets with diode laser Fotona XD-2, while group II patients (control group, n = 7) underwent only SRP.In both groups there was considerable improvement of clinical indexes, giving gingival and oral-hygiene status but statistically significant difference between the groups was not observed.
