This is the first of a three-part article which outlines, in depth, the refined approach of Davanloo's Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy to a group of patients with diffuse symptomatology: anxiety, panic, fainting, somatization and functional disorders. The process will be highlighted by systematic analysis of the initial phase of a trial therapy with a patient. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
