Abstract

With the use of a birefringent material, a method of determining the maximum shear strains around circular inclusions is discussed. The mounting of a small-field instrument is shown so that consistent and reproducible results can be obtained. The experimental and theoretical maximum shear strains are compared on a prism with a single inclusion.
