Abstract

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) patch has been known to have a function that can accelerate the wound healing process as well as a sealant to the wound. This prospective study evaluated the safety and efficacy of using PRF patch for urethroplasty in Proximal Hypospadias. Between January 2017 to June 2018, 15 boys underwent urethroplasty. Urethroplasties were performed by a single surgeon, using same technique and suture material. Before the surgery, 5-10 ml of patient’s blood was collected and immediate centrifuged to get a good PRF membrane. This membrane was applied as a patch over the suture lines and beneath the skin. A urethral catheter was kept in place for 7 days. Surgical complication and the incidence of urethrocutaneous fistula (UCF) were collected. With median follow-up of 1 years, we found 6 patients (40%) had a UCF and no other complication was noted. The PRF patch seem to be safe to use and no surgical complication was found, however we still need more study to describe the efficacy of PRF to reduce UCF and its recurrences.
