Abstract

Artificial zeolite is made of coal fly ash, a waste product of the electrical power plants. It ischaracterized with high cation exchange capacity. Application of artificial zeolite to the soil, in order toimprove its properties, is an environmental friendly way of disposing of fly ash. Sodic soil samples, at10 degrees slope, were mixed with calcium type of artificial zeolite and then subjected to simulatedrainfall of 40-mm/h and water drops fall height of 12 m. The addition of artificial zeolite increased soilaggregation and permeability, therefore soil erosion was reduced. It was assumed that sodiumcations were substituted by calcium cations from the artificial zeolite. As a result, dispersion of thesoil was retained and soil permeability increased.
