Abstract

The authors have tried to use some melt-quenched zirconium-based alloys exhibiting a very sharp superconducting transition at temperatures above 4.2K as a sensing element to detect precisely the level of liquid helium in a cryostat. As a result the partially amorphous Zr80Nb5Si7Al8 and the fully amorphous Zr75Rh25 alloys were found to be particularly well suited for this device and possess the following advantages over a conventional crystalline-type sensor. (1) The sensitivity is about 100 times higher. (2) The heater circuit can be eliminated. (3) No limitation is placed to the length of the sensing element. (4) A long tape with a high mechanical strength and good bend-ductility can be easily fabricated.
