Abstract

Abstract The interface reaction plays a crucial role in the properties of metal matrix composites (MMCs). In this paper, the thermodynamics of the solid-liquid interface reaction in MMCs was analyzed by a sub-regular solution model. The calculation method based on this model was used to explore the influence of alloying elements on the interface reactions in MMCs. This calculation method was applied to the actual Cf/Al-Mg composites in order to explain the influence of Mg elements on the interface reactions in Cf/Al-Mg composites and the result indicates that the formation of the brittle phase Al 4 C 3 at the C-Al interface in the Cf/Al-Mg composite is inhibited significantly with the increase of Mg content.
