Abstract

This study is motivated by a need to design a diffractive optical element arising in an application. Under realistic manufacturing constraints, it can be shown that the design problem is an optimization calculation with integer variables. We consider an optimization strategy based on Genetic Algorithms. We show that for a particular variant, called a Micro-Genetic Algorithm, the algorithm converges in a probabilistic sense to the global optimum. We demonstrate the use of the algorithm in the design of a diffractive optical element.KeywordsDiffractive OpticsGenetic AlgorithmsOptimization
