Abstract

Linking part of a functioning graphics oriented DSS with a host machine running on an existing special purpose interactive language can save implementation costs and implementation time for financial and marketing modelers. We assume that the DSS includes a color raster display device with an extended terminal support system, a joystick, a keyboard, and relational database software. The host machine is assumed to be an IBM 370 running a VM/CMS operating system and an applications program which is a commercially available financial and marketing modeling language known as EXPRESS. Many of the components typically contained in a DSS are already available in EXPRESS, including all relevant applications routines, database support routines, and databases containing relevant financial data. The paper outlines a potential dialogue section of a DSS, and its communications with the host. We explore a logical method of connecting the old concept of a command oriented interactive language with the new DSS concepts, in the specific limited area of financial and marketing modeling.
