Abstract
A gas filled avalanche detector, capable of operating at high count rates, has been developed in order to detect recoiling ions. The detector has been used to identify the signal of evaporation residue channels in the presence of strong fission competition. The performance of the detector has been investigated for the reaction of 83 and 95 MeV 18O ions on a 208Pb target.
