Abstract

The strengths and the limitations of various AC motor drive designs as they relate to several extrusion applications are examined. AC drives using variable voltage control, current source inversion, pulse-width modulation, vector control, and brushless AC or DC motors are considered. AC-drive strength and weaknesses are discussed. Digital control of the drives and their communications interfaces are noted, and factors influencing the proper selection of an AC drive for extruder use are enumerated. >
