Abstract

The basic principle of the spherical surface friction pendulum bearings (FPB) is studied and analyzed. For a three-span continuous bridge in high seismic area, the dynamic performance of bridges with the movable bearings and FPB in earthquake are compared and analyzed. The result shows that the internal force, plastic deformation and the relative displacement between the girder and the piers in the fixed pier are reduced than the movable bearings. FPB might be able to provide reliable friction dissipation, and distributes the earthquake energy focused on the fixed pier. Seismic performance of continuous bridges can be improved by FPB.
