Abstract
The Gupta & Larson (1979) regression equation for estimating soil moisture characteristics, the Campbell (1974) equation for evaluating conductivity-moisture suction at the wetting front were all applied to a largely predominant local soil in Nigeria. While the former method is not applicable in its present form to the Nigerian soil studied, the results of the latter compared favourably with laboratory determined values. The Kutilek's (1980) simple field method for estimating soil water diffusivity was also experimentally evaluated on the same soil and the result compared to that obtained from the widely acknowledged Arya et al. (1975) laboratory method. The comparison showed that Kutilek's field method did not yield satisfactory results due to the unreliability of the techniques for obtaining the soil parameters required in practical application of the method.
