Abstract
Since the last few decades, huge efforts are being made to convert a traditional power system into a smart system in order to control increasing energy demand. In this context, a new emerging grid called the smart grid (SG) consists of various technologies that are being deployed for demand-side management. This system has the ability to allow the consumers to participate in demand-side management by shifting their load from peak hour time slots to off-peak hour time slots. The main component of SG is the home energy management system (HEMS) as it enhances the energy efficiency of the system. In this context, an efficient (HEMS) based on JAYA optimization algorithm is implemented with Time of Use (TOU) and Critical Peak Pricing (CPP) energy pricing signals for the optimal scheduling of smart home appliances to reduce energy consumption cost, peak to average ratio (PAR) and maximize users’ comfort. As the JAYA algorithm has a good population updating strategy so it gives better results in fewer iterations without stucking into local minima. To check the effectiveness of this JAYA algorithm, a simulation is performed for residential consumers by using 16 home appliances. The results depict that this JAYA algorithm is quite capable of optimal scheduling of appliances.
