Abstract

Sign language was preferred by dumb people for communication. This project proposes a method using sign language conversion techniques for recognizing hand gestures and, thereby, controlling the appliances. Reducing the barrier is considered as the most important objective. These shortcomings may be faced by speaking-impaired people when communicating with others. This may be achieved by implementing an electronic device to translate sign language. There are several methods available to recognize the hand gesture. The first method uses the flex sensor to determine the hand gesture to provide the analog output. This analog output of the flex sensor is used to determine the hand gesture made using the sign language. A microcontroller is used to determine the hand gesture made and to transmit the signal using ZigBee module to the receiver unit which displays the symbol of the hand gesture using an LCD screen display. A microcontroller is provided in the receiver circuit which receives the signal from the transmitter using ZigBee module. In the second method, instead of data glove, the camera is utilized to capture the gesture. The captured images are compared with prestored database. Finally, in both methods, the signals received by the microcontroller are analyzed, and the control signals are generated by the microcontroller. A relay module is used to control the electronic appliances.
