Abstract

Eight and 10 different trap types were compared for their effectiveness in attracting the apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh), adults during 1985 and 1986 seasons, respectively. Ladd yellow rectangles with red hemispheres in the center and a Ladd apple volatile attractant (consisting of a mixture of hexyl acetate, butyl 2-methyl butyrate, propyl hexanoate, hexyl propionate, butyl hexanoate, and hexyl butanoate in a 36:7:12:5:29: 11 ratio) trapped the largest number of flies. This trap performed better than all other traps tested during both study years. Analysis of the ratios of positive response to traps suggests that the Ladd trap with red hemispheres and apple attractant was superior to both Pherocon AM and red sphere traps under both relatively low and high population density conditions. Other moderately effective traps were red spheres with Ladd attractant, Ladd yellow panels with red hemispheres, red spheres alone, and Pherocon AM traps. The addition of Zoecon apple attractant did not increase the effectiveness of Pherocon AM trap.
