Appendix II. UN Inter-Agency Co-Ordination Mechanisms

Abstract

With the creation of the UN system of independent organizations, agreements were established which set out in general terms how they were to co-operate. In order to institutionalize this co-operation, in 1946 the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) established the Advisory Committee on Co-ordination (ACC) to implement the relationship agreements. Inter-agency co-ordination is often associated with a proliferation of co-ordination mechanisms, meetings and reports. Streamlining has been one of the recurring themes of almost all reform initiatives. The section also provides detail on the various inter-agency coordination bodies, including, in particular, information on the mandate and membership of each mechanism.
