Abstract
This appendix section of this book Diplomacy with a Difference: The Commonwealth Office of High Commissioner, 1880–2006 presents a historical note on high commissioner. The title ‘high commissioner’ suggests that the person so designated has been charged with a commission to do something or other, and is rather senior. Its use for the heads of intra-Commonwealth diplomatic missions has been prominent and long lasting, and has acquired a significance of its own. But periodically the title has also been given to officials operating in a variety of other international or quasi-international contexts. The circumstances in which this has occurred may be loosely categorized as: vassal states; protected states; protectorates and other colonial-type situations; occupied territories; international and quasi-international enquiries; international administration and humanitarian activity.Keywords: high commissioner office; humanitarian activity; international administration; intra-Commonwealth diplomatic missions; occupied territories
