Abstract
ABSTRACT To the Editor.— The recent article by Pantell and Irwin (242:1627, 1979) reported results of a study on the incidence and quality of appendectomies performed during the May 1975 anesthesiologists' boycott in the San Francisco Bay area. Compared with May 1974 and January to June 1975, they found no change in the number of appendices removed during the boycott month. In another study (PAS Reporter 14:13, November 1976; Am Coll Surg Bull 61:18, 1976), the Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities (CPHA) examined the boycott's effect on the total number of patients operated on in 21 San Francisco Bay area hospitals participating in the Professional Activity Study (PAS). The PAS data showed a definite decrease in the number of patients operated on during May 1975 and most of the remainder of 1975, compared with the corresponding months of 1974.
