Abstract

Biomedical journals aim to publish papers of high quality and integrity. Editors attempt to achieve this goal by means of rigorous clinical and statistical peer review. If editorial decision-making leads to the best and most relevant papers being published in the best possible form, the journal will ultimately gain the trust of readers, authors, reviewers, and the public. Almost every aspect of this process involves important scientific and ethical principles and decisions that are rarely explicitly stated and even less often shared with the readership.
