Abstract

Mark–recapture ringing data from two sites in northwestern Russia were used to estimate apparent survival rates in populations of Garden Warbler Sylvia borin and Whitethroat S. communis. The computer program MARK was used to estimate survival and recapture rates, adjusted for transient birds, with respect to sexes at each site. Survival rate of Garden Warbler was higher than that of Whitethroat. This difference may reflect the habitat preferences of these species. Survival of Garden Warbler was similar between sexes; females of Whitethroat did not return to the study sites.
