Abstract

Summary Three pieces of apparatus which have been in use in the physics laboratories at Newcastle for some years are described. (1) A translational balance . This measures susceptibility between room and liquid-helium temperatures. (2) A vibration magnetometer . This measures saturation and remanent magnetization and coercive force. Hysteresis loops in the same temperature range as (1) and in fields up to 50,000 Oe may be plotted. (3) An astatic magnetometer . This measures the direction and intensity of remanent magnetization between room and liquid-nitrogen temperatures.
