Abstract

ABSTRACT Apomixis is a mode of asexual reproduction through seed. Apomixis can be classified into two types – gametophytic and sporophytic apomixis. The phenomenon of apomixis in higher plants is limited; however, it seems to play a critical role in the genetic diversity of Garcinia species. Many species in Garcinia undergo apomixis and this review highlights reproductive pathways of various Garcinia species documented over the years. Most of the Garcinia species are endemic. Garcinia species are known for their edible fruits. For the conservation of species and maintenance of genetic diversity, it is necessary to understand the processes by which Garcinia species reproduce.
