Abstract

Abstract The Apollo Ptoion Sanctuary in north‐western Boiotia was known for its oracle, which was consulted by the Boiotian League and cities, and by Mardonios in 479 bce . After the Archaic period, the supra‐regional reputation of the sanctuary declined, but during the Hellenistic period it was the place of Boiotian affirmation, with regular consecrations of tripods and musical games. In Roman times, private generosity allowed celebration to continue until the late third century. The exact chronological relation between the Apollo and Hero Ptoios sanctuaries are not yet resolved.
