Abstract

The selection of potential lunar landing sites for the Apollo Program poses some unusual problems. Among the factors to be considered are geographic location on the moon, surface topography, and mechanical properties. Data from Ranger, Surveyor, and Lunar Orbiter spacecraft are analyzed in detail to determine which sites are more suitable for lunar landings. Some of the methods used to reduce photographic data differ greatly from normal photogrammetric procedures. Monoscopic photography is reduced to produce topographic information in high-speed digital computers, and the resulting data is analyzed statistically for topographic suitability for landings.
