Abstract

Eight cases of ‘calcinosis circumscripta’ are described in order to present histological and histochemical evidence in support of a hypothesis that the lesion arises front apocrine sweat glands. The aetiology and nomenclature of the condition are discussed. It is suggested that the term ‘apocrine cystic calcinosis’ describes the condition more accurately than the term ‘calcinosis circumscripta’. One case of calcifying epithelioma is reported for comparison with calcinosis circumscripta; it is concluded that the 2 lesions are distinct, and that calcinosis circumscripta does not represent a late stage of calcifying epithelioma as has been suggested recently.
