Abstract

This study identified environment habitat that required by migratory birds in Matang Forest Reserve, Perak using environment modeling. Environment modeling includes information about land used, land cover and food sources that influences the distribution of migratory birds in habitat selections. Combination of environment and distribution of migratory bird populations data were utilized to assist in this modeling. The approach based on the applications of geographic information system and remote sensing was used in the modelling of environment. The usage of the GIS software, ArcGIS 9.5 assisted in the mapping of data collected during fieldwork. The Remote Sensing software, ERDAS Imagine 8.5 was used to model the relationship between study parameters and the density of migratory bird distribution. This study revealed the Pulau Kalumpang area had the density of migratory birds than others location in study area. Several location included Kuala Gula, Pulau Sanggar Besar, Pulau Trong and Pulau Pasir Hitam also recorded the high arrival of the bird’s migration. All of near cliffs area was focusing by bird migration as their habitat selection that has high food resource and covered by variety of mangrove plant species even close to various economic by local community. This research was needed to improve the preservation and conservation efforts around the mangrove areas to ensure the arrival of migratory birds continue in future at Matang Forest Reserve, Perak.
