Abstract
Aphakia is associated with an increased incidence of retinal detachment. Before the development of modern cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation, aphakic retinal detachments accounted for approximately 25% of all retinal detachments treated in referral retinal centers.1–3 Owing to the increasing popularity of intraocular lens implantation, the incidence of aphakic retinal detachment has shown a steady decrease over the last years, whereas pseudophakic retinal detachment has become more common. Variations in the incidence of retinal detachment in aphakic and pseudophakic eyes are probably related to the surgical technique used for lens removal rather than the absence or presence and type of intraocular lens.
