The APhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice & Management (APhA–APPM) recognizes the achievements of individuals who have made significant or sustained contributions to pharmacy practice. This year’s winners shared their thoughts and insights with Pharmacy Today. Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence Award Allen Nichol, PharmD, Pharmaceutical Care Consultant with Nichol & Associates in Gahanna, OH, “excels in pushing the boundaries of pharmacy practice in multiple directions at once,” wrote one of his nominators, citing his development of clinical treatment algorithms for numerous conditions, participation in the creation of software for the care of patients’ chronic diseases, and service as preceptor to nearly 400 students on their advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) rotations since 1999.The Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence Award was established in honor of APhA’s first president to recognize pharmacy practitioners in any practice setting who have distinguished themselves and the profession through outstanding performance and achievements. As a consultant with Nichol & Associates, Nichol has worked with the Ohio Department of Human Resources, Ohio Department of Health Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps, and numerous other organizations to improve the implementation of pharmacy care. Nichol is also cofounder and Vice President of Clinical Operations at CeutiCare and adjunct clinical faculty member for a number of colleges of pharmacy.“Allen Nichol has a vision of pharmacy that is futuristic but practical,” wrote one of his colleagues. “He has spent his career implementing his vision of the pharmacist providing direct care to patients and being reimbursed for those services. … He is a unique individual who has made an enormous contribution to the profession of pharmacy.”Pharmacy Management Excellence AwardTimothy J. Stroup, BSPharm, FAPhA, FASHP, Deputy Chief Consultant for Pharmacy Benefits Management (PBM) Strategic Planning & Business Development at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) PBM National Offices in Leavenworth, KS, told Today that he sees this award as a recognition for all of federal pharmacy. “I like to think this award helps bring recognition to the level of practice of pharmacy within all federal programs, including VA,” he said. The APhA–APPM Pharmacy Management Excellence Award recognizes APhA members in any practice setting who have distinguished themselves and the profession through outstanding performance in the area of pharmacy management. Stroup’s nominators emphasized his dedication to the profession and to patients across many roles. As one colleague wrote, “Throughout his career, Tim has demonstrated his exceptional professionalism as a practicing pharmacist, pharmacy program manager, patient care advocate, role model for staff, and pharmacy student mentor.”Stroup was first inspired to become a pharmacist by his high school chemistry teacher, joined VA pharmacy just a year after graduating from the University of Nebraska, and is approaching 40 years of service in federal pharmacy. He described pharmacy as a “very special profession in health care” and said one of his most valuable lessons was learning to “practice patience and persistence” both personally and professionally. “Making a positive change can take time, and you need to be patient and persistent if you really want to make a difference,” Stroup said.Distinguished Achievement Award in Pharmacy Management John Beckner, BSPharm, Regional Pharmacy Manager of Martin’s Food Markets in Richmond, VA, started his pharmacy career working in a small town in southwest Virginia. “I was impressed by the fact that the pharmacist was held in such high esteem in our little community,” he recalled. “He was confidant, friend, advisor, and counselor to many.” Today, Beckner wants the profession to “seize the opportunity” of pharmacists’ patient care services. The Distinguished Achievement Award in Pharmacy Management recognizes an individual who has made significant or sustained contributions in the area of pharmacy management. Beckner has been a practicing pharmacist for more than 30 years, including serving as Director of Pharmacy and Health Services for Ukrop’s Super Markets. The Association awarded Uk-rop’s with the Immunization Champion Award for Community Outreach at APhA2010, an honor Beckner recalls as a favorite Annual Meeting memory.Beckner encouraged his fellow pharmacists to “embrace patient care and experience the many ways to provide medication therapy management.” As he told Today, “I love the fact that pharmacists are in a unique position to impact people’s lives on a daily basis … [and] work with other health professionals to affect optimal outcomes for our patients.” Beckner said he hopes to continue his career by working with “pharmacists, state and national organizations, and academia to advance the profession and solidify its role within health care,” concluding, “I cannot imagine anything more rewarding.”Distinguished Achievement Award in Pharmacy Practice Stuart J. Beatty, PharmD, BCPS, Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at Ohio State University (OSU) College of Pharmacy in Columbus, is “truly a change agent for patient-centered care,” according to one of his nominating colleagues, who added that Beatty “represents the future pharmacy is trying to create.”The Distinguished Achievement Award in Pharmacy Practice recognizes an individual who has developed and/or implemented an innovative, original pharmacy program or service significant to their area of practice. Among Beatty’s noteworthy achievements is his work at the Martha More-house General Internal Medicine Clinic, a patient-centered medical home (PCMH) within Ohio State University’s Division of General Internal Medicine. Beatty also created a capstone course for student pharmacists before APPE rotations; this course was recognized with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Excellence in Assessment Award last year.In 2006, Beatty became the first pharmacist in the OSU Division of General Internal Medicine and one of the first pharmacists in the country to practice in a PCMH. His nominating colleagues commended him for his work in this PCMH, including transforming chronic pain management, establishing and managing an anticoagulation clinic, and creating an interprofessional diabetes clinic. “He has a creative and practical approach to developing better clinical workflows, making him one of the first people I reach to when I need a partner,” wrote one of his colleagues.APhA-APPM Fellows•Amber L.
