Abstract

A Poetics of Modernity: Indian Theatre Theory, 1850 to the Present is a thoughtful selection of excerpted writings by some seventy theatre practitioners, playwrights, and critics, representing various Indian languages, regions, and theatres. In her general introduction, editor Aparna Dharwadker expresses the distinctive modernity of Indian theatre, including its tendency toward “cultural recursiveness.”
