Abstract

Summary
In recent years a rather unusual form of aortitis of obscure origin has been observed in African children and adolescents. The term ‘idiopathic aortitis' has been used in the literature to describe this lesion. In the present paper, the aetiology, clinical and pathological features of the condition are briefly described and the radiological findings considered in some detail. The various arteriographic changes which may be demonstrated by aortography are illustrated. The relationship between this obscure type of aortitis in young Africans and classical Takayashu's syndrome is uncertain. The main features of the 2 conditions are tabulated to indicate some of their similarities and differences.
